EDINBURG – Several Rio Grande Valley agencies teamed up to honor a local fallen war hero’s mother.

Habitat for Humanity and America's Last Patrol volunteers stepped in to help the mother of late veteran Freddy Gonzalez, Dolia Gonzalez.

Crews worked on Gonzalez's house in March of last year after heavy rains caused the roof to leak.

Habitat for Humanity Project Manager Maria Coria said the work completed Wednesday morning on the house is minimal compared to Gonzalez’s sacrifice.

“A mother that gave her son for this country, so we’re doing a little bit to give back,” she said.

Coria said work at the home includes replacing soffit, fascia and flooring. She said the inside of the home and the patio will also get a face lift.  

Gonzalez said she’s looking forward to the patio repairs the most.

“Now, they’re really banging down the house. They’re tearing it apart and fixing it. I’m really proud of these people. They’ve really helped me out,” she said.

Commander Richard Pena with America's Last Patrol said it's an obligation to not only help veterans in need, but also give back to their family. 

“This is not their first, this is not going to be the last veteran we help,” he said.

The work done at the Gonzalez's house is through a program with Habitat for Humanity called Aging in Place.

It’s expected to wrap up in the next few days and crews will then move into the inside of the home.
