WESLACO – Antonio Cedeño loves to play football. He started playing south of the border in Monterrey.

However, trying to pick up what his coaches are telling him can be challenging for the Weslaco East quarterback.

“It’s kind of difficult because the signals and the system and the English too,” said Cedeño.

Weslaco East coach Michael Burget relies on assistant coaches who speak Spanish to relay instructions to Cedeño.

“I’m not going to sit here and lie,” said Burget. “It’s a little difficult, but I’m dealing with a great kid. A kid that really wants to be here, that wants to make something of himself. He’s starting to pick up English a lot faster than I’m picking up Spanish in the last 27 years.

Cedeño played on the junior varsity level last year. His talent convinced coaches to give him a shot as the starting, varsity QB.

“Once you see him run and throw, that was easy to give him the keys to my truck,” said Burget. “To let him take over the quarterback position. I think he’s going to do a great job.”

Language isn’t Cedeño’s only challenge. He says the football competition is tougher in the Valley compared to Mexico.

Last week, Cedeño scored the only touchdown in a 7-0 win over Harlingen. East has been primarily a running team, but Burget says Cedeño will get to throw the ball more going forward.

Weslaco East’s next game is Friday against Donna North.
