BROWNSVILLE – Elderly people living in a Rio Grande Valley city are proving they can dance their way into a healthier lifestyle.

Tere Pozos hosts a dance class for seniors at Casa De Amigos in Brownsville. She said it’s where she first began her journey as an educator.

Ten years ago, Pozos was diagnosed with diabetes. She decided to not let the diagnosis define her. As a student, Pozos said the classes at Casa De Amigos would help her keep active.

“I need to exercise… In my experience, exercise for diabetic people helps a lot,” she said.

Pozos then decided to become a licensed health promoter herself.

“I started before like a student. I liked the activities part of the job, it’s a physical activity. You don’t just focus on the food,” she said.

As a diabetic, Pozos knew the importance of exercising. She said there’s something everyone can participate in.

“It’s not the same. You’re dancing slowly; you don’t feel like you’re exercising. We all can do it,’ she said. “The time I’ve been here, I’ve taken these classes and my teacher would tell me if you can walk you can dance.”

Pozos said the feedback she gets from her classes is always positive. She said people are able to have a good time while getting on their feet.

“You don’t need you heart to beat out of your chest, it helps your numbers,” she said.

She said she uses her disease to educate others and help them understand they have option. She’ll continue to keep moving and hopes to continue to inspire others along the way.
