HARLINGEN – An investigation is underway in Cameron County to find out how a transmigrante was killed while on the job.

Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio said the man was crushed by the tractor part of a tractor trailer, when the chain it was hooked on to broke as the man was working on the cargo. It pinned him underneath, killing him.

The accident happened at Transmigrantes Villa Nueva, located near the intersection of Rangerville Road and FM 800 outside Harlingen.

The man has been identified as a 43-year-old man from Guatemala. CHANNEL 5 NEWS isn't releasing the man's name since his family has yet to be notified.

That area, as well as the nearby town of Los Indios, is a hotspot for transmigrante businesses, given the proximity to the Los Indios International Bridge.

Transmigrantes are people from Latin America that come into the U.S. to purchase used goods, majority of the time vehicles, which they take back home to sale.

Lucio added they are working with the Mexican Consulate in Brownsville to contact authorities and the man's family in Guatemala.
