Alamo Family Overwhelmed with $1K Towing Bill
ALAMO – A Rio Grande Valley family has sticker shock after getting a bill for more than $1000 to tow a car several blocks following a crash in Alamo.
Gisel Garza said her grandfather was at fault for the crash. She said police ordered the car towed where it sat damaged on Business 83, just half a block from her grandfather's house.
The next day Garza said she found out about the large bill.
"From one day to the next?" she said. "How is that possible?"
Broken down, the costs included:
- Tow fee - $350
- Clean up fee - $250
- Winching fee - $250
That was in addition to a list of other storage and office fees. The total bill was $1099, which the family paid to have the vehicle released.
The owner of Long Haul Towing responded saying that all his fees are within state and municipal regulations.
The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation reviewed the bill and said a $50 administrative fee was not allowed under state rules.
