Authorities Seek Person of Interest in Custody Dispute, Chil
UPDATE (8:50 p.m.): An arrest warrant has been issued for 68-year-old Elizabeth Guerrero for the murder of Gilberto Gaytan.
Officials have not named her daughter 22-year-old Elizabeth Morales as a suspect, but do wish to speak to her and conduct a welfare check on her 2-year-old.
Investigators collected sworn statements from witnesses, gathered evidence and discovered that the 68-year-old intentionally caused the injuries which led to the victim's death.
MISSION – A 2-year-old child is missing and her father – dead. Investigators are now trying to find the little girl’s grandmother.
The toddler turned two years old Thursday. Her father 20-year-old Gilberto Gaytan was killed the same day.
Investigators are calling her grandmother a person of interest in the case.
Elizabeth Guerrero, the child’s maternal grandmother, is being sought by Hidalgo County investigators.
“The preliminary investigation leads us to believe that a vehicle had caused the fatal injuries to Mr. Gaytan, the victim,” stated Hidalgo County Sheriff Eddie Guerra.
The 68-year-old was allegedly driving a 2002 silver Acura SUV. Police said the car hit Gaytan killing him.
The child, Lizsandra Jennica Gaytan was also inside the car with Guerrero’s 22-year-old daughter, Elizabeth Morales, who's also Gaytan's ex common law partner.
The toddler was at the center of a custody dispute and is now left without her father.
As neighboring residents woke up Thursday morning, they found Gaytan’s body still lying in the middle of the street.
“We never expected it was going to be him,” said a neighbor.
Guerra explained, “When the deputies arrived, there was quite a few family members tending to the victim and a lot of neighbors.”
The victim’s family is hurting this evening and hoping police track the person responsible for their loved one’s death.
“Right now, we’re still conducting our investigation. Talking to witnesses and gathering possibly some video evidence,” said Guerra.
Police are working to piece together the details in this disturbance call turned homicide investigation.
Investigators said it’s faster to issue a regional RAS alert rather than a statewide Amber Alert, but they have not ruled out asking the state for help.
