BPUB Warns of Imposters Demanding Payments
BROWNSVILLE – The Brownsville Public Utilities Board is warning residents of people claiming to work for the company.
According to reports, a person posing as a BPUB employee calls a customer and demands a payment for repairs or an outstanding bill. The caller then instructs customers to buy a pre-paid cash card and call back with the information.
The callers have been known to speak in both English and Spanish. They have also used caller ID spoofing to disguise the originating number and have it appear as if BPUB is calling.
BPUB said they do not use live operators to make collection calls or request payments for other services.
