Butterfly Refuge Files Lawsuit against Federal Government

MISSION – A nonprofit wildlife refuge located along the U.S.-Mexico border is taking on the federal government.

The National Butterfly Center officially filed a lawsuit after the Army Corps of Engineers conducted aerial mapping of the property for the proposed border wall.

Other properties were also mapped in Starr and Hidalgo counties.

The director of the National Butterfly Center, Marianna Trevino-Wright, says they were never notified that contractors would be on the property.

“Very much because of the fact that due process has been ignored in this case and the fact that our private property rights have been trampled. So, that is a basis for the lawsuit,” said Trevino-Wright.

She says after the initial incident, they ended an agreement with U.S. Customs and Border Protection to allow agents to enter the property.

Trevino-Wright says agents still enter their property, citing a national act that currently permits agents on property within 25 miles of the border.
