CBP Urges Travelers to Have Paperwork Ready to Avoid Bridge Wait Times
Customs and Border Protection Officials are urging people to get their paperwork lined up ahead of the expected uptick in holiday travel.
Daniel Rojas, who lives in Reynosa, says he crosses into the U.S. Through the Hidalgo International Bridge on a regular bases.
Sunday, he says had to wait several hours to get across. Rojas says that is unusual.
"Normally it takes half an hour. At times, it is an hour and a half," said Rojas.
Rojas says he realizes there is more holiday travel. He wants to know why there were so many people waiting to get into the U.S. over the weekend.
CHANNEL FIVE NEWS reached out to U.S. Customs and Border Protection to ask if there was a reason for the delay at the bridge.
In a statement, CBP says it has already begun implementation of multiple measures to make things simpler during the holidays. The agency says to keep wait times low, staff at ports of entry encourage travelers to apply for tourist permits, or I-94 online. As part of the I-94 process, CBP says travelers must present themselves at a port of entry within seven days of their application to be interviewed by a CBP officer, submit biometric finger scans and your photo is taken.
In order to start the application for the arrival-departure card, CBP says visit the website.
Rojas says he believes travelers should have their documents to make things easier.
There is a way to check on border wait times online. Head to the website, bwt.cbp.gov
There is also an app where you can check wait times, just search CBP BWT.
Wait times are updated every hour. The app is available for both iPhone and Android.
