SOUTH PADRE ISLAND - The city of South Padre Island is offering $500 for information in a vandalism case leading to the arrest and conviction of suspects involved in a case at the visitor’s center.

According to police, four male suspects vandalized the sandcastle in front of the visitor's center as well as stole a city flag.

Police Chief Randy Smith says this isn't the first time they have dealt with something like this.

"I think anytime you have a large event and large amounts of people you end up with certain incidents that occur," said Smith.

The estimated cost of damages is around $24,000.

"We're saddened that it happened and it's going to be a significant rebuild on that sand castle a lot of work goes into that and they are relatively expensive obviously," said Smith.

Spring breaker Ana Larson said incidents like this give them a bad name.

"We just knew it was a big spring break destination, it's our last year," said Larson.

This isn't the first time the island has dealt with vandalism, specifically with sand castles.

"In the past, since I've been here for eight or nine years, I can think of a few sand castles where we've had reports. Different businesses will also hire somebody to build a sand castle for advertising," said Smith.

With spring break just beginning, Smith says they are working hard to keep the city safe.

If you have any information on the case you are urged to contact the South Padre Island Police Department at (956) 761-5454.
