The superintendent of the Donna Independent School District will soon be leaving his position and the Rio Grande Valley after accepting a similar situation with the Round Rock school district.

Dr. Hafedh Azaiez spoke to Channel 5 about his time at Donna ISD and what he hopes he's accomplished.

"I'm going to miss everybody," Azaiez said. "Donna is always going to have a very special place in my heart."

Walking down the halls of J.P Lenoir Elementary, Azaiez shares a smile with students, celebrating the end of an academic year like no other.

The superintendent says students have been his driving force ever since taking the reins of Donna ISD in July of 2018.

His five-year strategic plan involved restoring community trust, re-branding the district, and enhancing opportunities for students.

"We want to make sure that our students are successful," Azaiez said. "Doesn't matter if we have to work harder."

When the coronavirus pandemic hit, under Azaiez's leadership, the district invested in hot spots, Chromebooks, iPads, and WiFi towers, to ensure every student could keep learning.

Now, as he prepares to say goodbye to the community, he hopes they remember him as someone who always made sure students were the top priority.

"I hope they remember me as someone that cared," he said. "I cared about the students, the staff— about Donna as a whole and Donna ISD. I want to thank them from the bottom of my heart. Thank them all."
