Energy providers say electricity bills are expected to spike

The high demand for electricity last week could result in higher bills for customers in the future.

While most Valley residents have their power back on, Magic Valley Electric Co-op Business and Employee Development Division Manager Abraham Quiroga said they do "anticipate that members will be seeing slightly larger bills either the next month or the next few months."

Quiroga said Magic Valley saw electricity prices spike across the state last week due to the high demand.

He said the high demand and lack of generation combined and drove prices up during the winter storm.

Quiroga said right now, the company is still waiting on their energy markets to assess the full impact it will have on customers' electricity bills. He said higher costs may show up during the March and April electricity bills.

"Our intention, if energy prices do go up, is to try to spread that out over multiple months," Quiroga said. "Basically not passing it onto members right off the bat."
