EDINBURG - The Vela SaberCats needed a 55-yard field goal in the final minute of regulation time to record a 34-32 win over Hanna in bi-district play on Friday. That was one of 13 games scheduled involving Valley teams. Vela built a 28-14 halftime lead over the visitors from Brownsville, but scored only a pair of field goals in the second half as Hanna mounted a comeback. The Eagles trailed in the fourth quarter before taking a 32-31 lead. Vela's long field goal kept the Cats unbeaten for the season at 11-0. Vela will face Eagle Pass in the area round.
Three schools earned the opportunity for a re-match. McAllen Memorial dusted United South 44-6 to gain another shot at San Benito. The Greyhounds won at McAllen in week three. Mercedes thumped Pioneer 68-31. The Tigers will again face familiar foe Calallen in the area round. Mission Veterans' 25-17 win over Lopez means the Patriots will face a playoff re-match from a year ago. Mission Veterans will face Flour Bluff in 5A, Division 1 Area round play.
