Harlingen Shelter Reports Increase in Number of Homeless People

HARLINGEN – A shelter in Harlingen reported an increase in the number of homeless people who have stayed with them this year.

The executive director of Loaves and Fishes, Bill Reagan, says 352 people have stayed at the shelter through October of this year. For 2017, there were 330 people.

"Even though our economy is better, the availability of housing that people who earn modest incomes can afford is really pretty tight. And so, people get sort of squeezed out, just above that level where they can qualify for public housing and below that level where they would be involved in middle-class apartments,” says Reagan.
