Holiday Cheer Pours throughout Respite Center in McAllen
MCALLEN – For many parents and children at Sacred Heart Respite Center a warm meal and a place to stay is reason enough to be thankful.
However, they’ve had more reason to be cheerful during the holiday season.
The amount of toy donations at Sacred Heart is increasing closer to Christmas.
“Oh yes, isn’t this wonderful? Every day we get toys from so many different groups,” Sister Norma Pimentel said.
Big boxes full of toys leave the children in the center with a big smile on their face. Their stay in McAllen may be short, but Pimentel said seeing their faces light up is a memorable experience.
“To see them enjoy a toy for the very first time because they haven’t have a toy for, I don’t know how long, ever… to have something that lifts the spirit of a child is beautiful,” she said.
One of the children with lifted spirits is Anthony. He anxiously waited for his dad, Francisco Manuel Guerra Gomez, open his set of dinosaurs.
And Jennifer Liliana’s daughter, Ashley, said she adored her doll.
The toys are a symbol of happiness, which is what these families hope to find as they set off for their next destination throughout the country.
