SAN JUAN - Hundreds of people continue to visit the Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan del Valle during this time of the year.

Laredo resident Isabella Hueina said her holiday tradition is making a three-hour journey to the Basilica. For many like her the holiday season is a time for family gatherings, traditions and giving thanks.

“It’s a very special place here, where I find a lot of peace. And that’s why I make it a point of coming either before Christmas or whenever we can,” she said.

Hueina said she has made the trip for the past 15 years. She said she always makes time for a trip during the holiday season.

“It has a lot to do with giving thanks to God, to the Virgin and just enjoying time with the family,” she said.

However, Hueina said her trip does not compare to foreigners who traveled from their countries to San Juan.

“We have friends that travel from different places and different cities just to be here. They do make it a point of coming,” she said.

Many of these people come on a pilgrimage, a spiritual journey that brings people from all over the world. Some come to make promises for next year.

“It’s really nice to just come over and pray and give thanks and enjoy the peace that we feel here,” Huenia said.

She said she plans to make another trip back down to San Juan in the new year.

The Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan del Valle is open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day.
