Law Enforcement Agencies Undergo Threat Assessment Training
SAN JUAN - Rio Grande Valley law enforcement agencies are taking additional training to help with their decision making while out on a call.
Instructional officers from six different local departments participated in an officer-involved shooting stimulator training.
San Juan Police Chief Juan Gonzalez said the training helps them with threat assessment. He said it can help officers work their way through scenarios they could come across while out in the job.
“It’s a great tool for us, for our officers too. Bring them into a controlled environment, one by one and assess their critical thinking, their decision making and in very stressful situations,” he said. “(We) also allow them to have an opportunity to debrief after the scenario, and make sure what areas they need to improve on.”
Instructors with the training said there are 500 different “shoot” and “don’t shoot” scenarios.
Gonzalez added the exercise shows the stress officers can go through when in these types of situations.
