Lawsuit Filed to Temporarily Halt Electioneering Resolution

RIO GRANDE CITY – A lawsuit was filed against Starr County late Tuesday to temporarily stop the implementation of their electioneering resolution.

Two civil rights groups are asking a judge for a temporary restraining order against Starr County.

The resolution that was adopted in January expands the boundary for electioneering which was set by the state at 100 feet.

The Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, or MALDEF, and the Texas Civil Rights Project filed it on behalf of the Republican and Democratic chair of Starr County.

The lawsuit is asking the court to strike down the rule alleging it violates the First Amendment and state law.
