Local Venues Discuss Safety Protocols Following Deadly Las V

EDINBURG – In the wake of the deadly shooting in Las Vegas, local venues in the Rio Grande Valley are seeing what can be done to make their guests safer.
CHANNEL 5 NEWS spoke with the general managers for HEB Park and the State Farm Arena. Both tell us the protocols to keep people safe is constantly evolving.
For a venue, safety for guests is a number one priority.
"We go through metal detectors, we have 17 police officers, we do bag checks, we do wanding, there are no guns allowed, there are certain items not allowed in these stadiums," said Eric Trevino, the HEB Park general manager.
Trevino said a lot of planning goes into security at their events. This is especially the case if someone tries to bring in an item which isn't allowed.
"Our security directors that come in are actually licensed police officers. They talk to the individual ask them politely to go to their vehicle and drop it off at their vehicle. If they don't want to abide by the rules then we send them home," said Trevino.
Marc Solis, the State Farm Arena general manager, said as a venue they need to take everything into consideration when it comes to safety. A mistake could be costly.
"Rest assured we do everything we can to try and mitigate as much as we possibly can to make the experience a safe experience for all the attendees," said Solis.
With the tragic event in Las Vegas, both Trevino and Solis state they’re taking a look at what they can do to prevent a similar disaster from happening here.
"A lot of the information is going to be discussed in the coming weeks and months on how we better protect ourselves," said Solis.
As a venue, Solis said there is no time for hesitation when lives could be on the line.
Both Solis and Trevino said they also work constantly with local law enforcement to see what else can be done in regards to safety.
