McAllen mayoral candidates hold first virtual debate

Five people hoping to become the next mayor of the city of McAllen held a live-streamed debate on Wednesday.

The mayoral candidates are as follows: McAllen Planning and Zoning Commission member Michael Fallek, McAllen City Commissioner Javier Villalobos, President of Hidalgo County Water Improvement District No.3 Othal Brand Jr., McAllen Mayor Pro Tem and City Commissioner Veronica Vela Whitacre and Physician Dr. Shahid Rashid.

The online event began with the candidate introductions, where each person described why they should be the next mayor of the city. 

The candidates were then given 90 seconds to answer questions.

While all the candidates said they wanted the best for the city and shared views on infrastructure, they did not agree on issues like immigration. 

Election day is Saturday, May 1 and the last day to register to vote is April 1.
