New facial recognition cameras installed at Valley ports of entry

PROGRESO – New biometric technology is now activated at the border. Facial recognition tech was setup at Rio Grande Valley ports of entry this week.

People walking back into the United States will have to go through an extra step in the verification process.

Customs and Border Protection officers will be using a new camera to take a picture of travelers’ faces as they walk up to present their passport or ID, then the document will be scanned and compared the facial image.

According to CBP, the new cameras come after a mandate from Congress and were recommended by the 9/11 Commission. The agency stated several reasons.

Officers have already intercepted about 245 fake IDs at the Progreso port of entry, according to CBP.
