Officials Say Flood Repairs Slow Due to Lack of Funds

WESLACO – Several cities in Hidalgo and Cameron counties were denied grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency when heavy storms hit in June.

Since we’re at the peak of hurricane season, officials say funds are needed now more than ever.

“We can't afford to have that again. A lot of families lost a lot of their belongings,” says Mercedes resident Leticia Martinez.

KRGV’s Cecilia Gutierrez spoke with Cameron County Emergency Management Coordinator Tom Hushen about the repairs that still need to be complete.

"What happened was they overfilled with water and when they came in, they started to collapse in. So, our crews out in  our drainage districts and irrigation districts have been doing repairs steadily across the region making sure that the water can flow,” says Hushen.

He explains those repairs have been slow because the cities were denied grants from FEMA.
