Peso Devaluation Deterring Mexican Nationals from RGV Busine
EDINBURG - A Rio Grande Valley hotel said they’re dealing with a dip in business from Mexican shoppers staying over.
For years, the Echo Hotel in Edinburg was bustling this time of year with Mexican shoppers. They said Thursday only a couple of Mexican customers used their services.
This fall’s devaluation of the peso has hurt Mexican shopping numbers in the Valley. Echo Hotel manager Joe Nunez said he’s longing for the days when there were more people inside his building.
“We miss them because it’s our business to have them here… They’re good people. (They) come down and do some shopping, and they spend a lot of money,” he said.
Nunez added he believes Mexican shoppers will be back in the Valley when the peso balances out again.
