Port Isabel Awaits Key Showdown With Raymondville

PORT ISABEL – The Tarpons were 2-7 last season. It’s a program that’s been through three head coaches in three years.

But this season, the Tarpons say they’re turning things around. They’re hungry for a title.

“We’re close to getting that district championship and this is another step that coach talks about,” said senior defensive end Allen Garcia.

Standing in their way is Raymondville.

“They’re a great team, but we can go out and play with them,” said Garcia.

“They’re a good team,” said senior center Alek Zermeno. “They are fast pace, they are physical, but we are just as physical.”

The Bearkats gave the Rocky James-led Rio Hondo Bearkats their first loss of the season last week.

“Like coach said, if we take down this team, we’re declaring the title,” said senior offensive tackle Angel Cacho.

Raymondville has a talented roster Port Isabel is preparing for.

“We can play with them,” said Garcia. “They can’t get to our heads. We just have to go do what we do. It’s a big factor in obviously winning.”

The Tarpons aren’t backing down without a fight.

“Nothing can hold us down,” said Zermeno. “We are just going to go out there and win it.”
