Red Ants Look To March On
PROGRESO – It’s business as usual at Progreso High School. Boys soccer coach Margarito Jimenez is gearing up his Red Ants for another deep run in the postseason.
Progreso won district 32-4A with a 9-1 record. The school’s fourth district title in the last five years.
The Red Ants kicked off the playoffs last week with a 7-0 shutout of Raymondville.
“By the time district game, we got stronger and by that time we won,” said senior defender Oscar Munoz. “This past game against Raymondville, we proved it.”
Progreso has more than a dozen seniors on the squad. Their experience pays off on the field.
“Really strong communication between everyone and that’s what makes us better,” said senior defender Hugo Guajardo.
The Red Ants are taking things one game at a time, but their main goal is going back to the state tournament for a third straight year.
“I got most of the boys coming back,” said Jimenez. “I know these boys are hungrier than last year and they do want to do their best to come back and do something at state.”
“I’m a senior,” said midfielder Fabrizzio Gonzalez. “I want to win it at all costs. I don’t care how we win it. I just want to win it.”
Progreso faces Somerset in the area round Tuesday at 4pm at Calallen High School.
