SPARC card used for liquor and tattoos? Edinburg City Council says it's OK
When the coronavirus pandemic struck Edinburg, the city wanted to help both residents and businesses.
The solution? SPARC.
Edinburg created SPARC — Stimulus Program Aimed at Recovery from COVID — to boost local businesses.
The program included grants to local businesses and gift cards for residents.
SPARC gift cards may be used at any participating business. As a result, Edinburg residents may purchase anything from food and haircuts to alcohol and tattoos.
City Councilman Gilbert Enriquez said all businesses should be treated equally, regardless of what they sell.
"I preach fairness across the board," Enriquez said. "If we're going to do it for one, we need to do it for everybody."
