WESLACO – Despite a recent discovery of the largest oil and natural gas deposit in the U.S, early data showed Texas oil monthly production is down.

Heavy equipment operator Joel Vela has been in the oil fields since he was 15 years old. He said he worries when work starts slowing down.

A local company, Oil Derrick’s, is at standstill. Empty businesses that catered to them are up for sale and showing signs of the past.

Oil field workers said it’s a challenge to stay employed once work is slow.

Hidalgo County brothers, Luis and Santos Chapa, said they had to find an entirely new line of work after they bailed out of the industry.

“Well, we didn’t know at that time. We saw that it was coming down. We just kept preparing. That’s it,” he said.

Restaurant owner Erica Ysaguirre said her husband worked in the oil field for 19 years.

“And when it slowed down, we decided it was time for him to get out. And we decided to open up a second location,” she said.

Meanwhile, workers at oil fields hope that business will pick up.
