Thousands Dropped from Registered Voter List in Cameron Co.

BROWNSVILLE – An estimated 7,200 people were dropped from the list of registered voters in Cameron County. And another 7,000 are also in danger of getting cut if they don’t update their information soon.
Elections administrator Remi Garza said the “purge” is required by state law every two years.
Voters are dropped after two presidential cycles if they have not been active voters or haven’t updated their voter registration information, despite repeated attempts by the elections department.
“These are individuals on the list that no longer live in Cameron County, so we are essentially tightening up our list and making it as accurate as possible. We’re required by law to do this. There’s a formula that the state has that we have to apply to our voter registration list to make sure it’s as accurate as possible. It does reduce the possibility for election fraud,” Garza said.
People removed from the voter registration list will need to file a new application to register to vote again. If they wish to participate in municipal elections this May, they must register at least 30 days in advance.
