Turf Going Down in Rio Grande City
RIO GRANDE CITY – At the moment it’s just dirt. But soon the dirt will be covered up by brand new, Matrix Helix Turf from Hellas Construction.
It’s the same turf that’s in the Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium.
“I think it’s a great investment,” said Rio Grande City football coach Aaron Garcia. “I applaud our upper administration and school board. I think any time you invest in our youth, it’s a great investment.”
In addition to Joe R. Sanchez Stadium, practice fields at Rio Grande City High School and Grulla High School will also get new turf.
It’s a welcomed addition for the Rattlers and Gators.
“Being there the last couple of years, every game that’s played away from home is on turf,” said Garcia. “I think the kids are excited. This will bring some extra pride to our program and to our other programs as well.”
Garcia tells CHANNEL 5 Sports, the project should be done in time for the start of the new school year.
Grulla will play the first game on the Joe R. Sanchez turf August 31 against St. Joseph Academy. The Rattlers will be on the field the following week to face Palmview.
“I think it gives our community and school district something to be proud of,” said Garcia. “It’s going to be awesome and all I can tell you is our kids are excited about it.”
