Valley Animal Shelter Seeking Volunteers for Layout Restruct
EDINBURG – It’s called 4 Day, 4 Life. The Palm Valley Animal Center is reshaping its facility, the way it handles intake and its sanitation routine.
For four days, the center is asking people in the community to house a pet until Thursday, while they conduct a deep-clean of the facility. Having fewer animals at the facility will also allow volunteers and staff to move kennels around.
“So this is a program that we have right now, we're in the middle of sort of renovating, fully sanitizing our facilities so we need the community to come in and help us take care of these pets that we have on site,” said Ricardo Ybarra, volunteer lead at Palm Valley Animal Center.
Mariah Valdivia was among those picking up a pet to keep for a few days.
“I'm pretty sure we might end up adopting him, hopefully,” she said while glancing at her mom for reassurance.
Ybarra said adoption fees are waived this week for a limited time.
Faith Wright with Austin Pets Alive helped with the changes. One of the problems being addressed is the animal flow.
“Right now we have some animals that you know one might be getting sick and it's mixed in with another one, and another one, just because of the way the kennel rotation is,” said Wright.
The animal shelter will create different kennel sections for different animals that come in depending on the day. Setting aside different kennels will limit the spread of disease.
“But in order to make this successful we have to have the community involvement behind them,” Wright emphasized.
She says they need volunteers, donations, and people who will foster.
As part of the changes, PVAC will also make it easier to adopt. They will soon offer an adoption area at the PVAC location, so people won’t have to be forced to go to the PAWS facility only.
