EDINBURG – It was on June 19, 1865, when the Emancipation Proclamation was read in Galveston, setting slaves free.

Before they were free, a cemetery in Hidalgo County was the only one blacks could be buried.

Twenty-five years ago, people from the Rio Grande Valley black community started gathering at the small cemetery in Edinburg to celebrate Juneteenth.

For many, the burial grounds are now a source of pride to call their final resting place.
