LINN-SAN MANUEL – Wild turkeys have made a home at the grounds of a Hidalgo County school.

People say for a long time, the animals have found sanctuary at Brewster School and spend their days foraging through the grass and brush for food.

The group, called a rafter, doesn’t always get along with others.

“Here in the Rio Grande Valley for whatever reason, they tend to be more on the outskirts in the brush country and not usually around humans,” says John Brush, an urban ecologist at Quinta Mazatlan in McAllen.

KRGV’s Christian von Preysing learned wild turkey sightings have also been reported north of Edinburg and in Port Mansfield.
