Willacy Co. Drainage Systems at Capacity Following Flooding

LYFORD – Willacy County drainage systems are at capacity after Monday’s storms.

The water at the canal in the city of Lyford is flowing very slowly and some is even spilling over and into homes.

Mary Ochoa was forced to go across the street to higher ground; she lives next to the canal.

Ochoa says her neighborhood never floods, but has a theory about why water is spilling over.

“So I think this is not so much drain water. I think this is much water that was actually from the farmers throwing out over here," she says.

District Manager Paul Greenhill says the canals are at capacity for now.

“When the storm blew in at approximately 12 to 18 hours we got from 14 to 20 inches all of Willacy County. At that time the ditches went from complete dry to complete full,” says Greenhill.

He says some of the water drains from other counties, but the reason the canals are full  is due to the large amount of rain in a short time and not drainage from other counties.

Greenhill explains ditches are draining very slowly.

He says homeowner should see a big difference by this weekend.
