With cold weather arriving, officials remind the public of space heater safety tips

While the change in weather is temporary, some of you may be dusting off those space heaters.

A third of all house fires are caused by a space heater, and it’s recommended you make sure to clean one before using it.

Space heaters should also be plugged into a wall socket, not an extension cord.

Lt. Jason Perez with the Edinburg Fire Marshal's Office also added that space heaters must be three feet away from any combustible item, and that smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are working.

Space heaters must be placed on a level surface and be turned off when leaving the room or going to sleep.
