Department of Veterans Affairs Statement on the study:
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) appreciates the work of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Committee in their assessment of the readjustment needs of Veterans, service members and their families. VA is committed to providing Veterans with quality care they have earned. Findings of this extensive review will allow VA to enhance the care we provide to Veterans of Operations Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom and New Dawn (OIF/OEF/OND) as they return home.
With a utilization rate of greater than 56 percent, more returning Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans come to VA for their health care than any other generation of Veterans. This report provides VA a better understanding of the difficulties some Veterans face as they readjust to home, reconnect with family members, find employment and return to school. Greater collaboration with the Department of Defense (DoD) in the areas of research, treatment and clinical outcomes will further enhance continuity of care as service members transition from active to Veteran status.
