PROGRESO – The Department of Public Safety is investigating a fatal crash near Progreso.

The crash happened around 6:30 p.m. Thursday on Mile 2 and U.S. Military 281 Highway.

DPS Lt. Johnny Hernandez says the passenger car was traveling eastbound on Military 281, while the tractor-trailer was traveling westbound.

The passenger car lost control and veered into the westbound lane, colliding with the tractor-trailer.

“For unknown reasons, the passenger car veered into the tractor-trailer’s lane and collided,” said Hernandez.

A passenger in the car was killed. The driver of the car was also taken to the hospital. The truck driver wasn’t hurt.

The deceased passenger was 44-year-old Heliodoro Alejandre Jr. of Santa Rosa.

Both eastbound and westbound traffic on Military 281 Highway will be blocked off until 11 p.m.
