SOUTH PADRE ISLAND – A routine patrol by a Coast Guard helicopter led to the detainment of 13 fishermen.

The Coast Guard says the fishermen were illegally fishing more than 4,600 pounds of red snapper, north of South Padre Island near Port Mansfield.

Jason Ferguson from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Fisheries says the men traveled into U.S. waters from Playa Bagdad, located near Matamoros.

Officials say there aren’t as many fishing regulations for Mexican waters.

The fishermen were cited and turned over to Border Patrol officers and released at the Brownsville port of entry.
