250 Suspects Facing Elderly Fraud Charges

WESLACO – More than 250 people are facing charges after allegedly victimizing more than a million senior citizens.

According to an FBI press release, the suspects accounted for losses totaling more than half a billion dollars to seniors.

The release states it’s the largest coordinated sweet of elder fraud in history.

The cases include criminal, civil and forfeiture actions across more than 50 federal districts.

These frauds were carried out through mass mailing, telemarketing and investments, incidents of identity theft and theft by guardians.

According to the release, a number of cases involved transnational criminal organizations, others involved relatives of the victims.

Two-hundred of the 250 suspects were charged criminally.
