A Look at the Hiring Process for Bailiffs
WESLACO – A former Hidalgo County bailiff is awaiting sentencing after he pleaded guilty to federal charges.
Former Hidalgo County bailiff Oscar De La Cruz served as a bailiff for the county several decades before being charged with drug conspiracy.
CHANNEL 5 NEWS wanted to take a closer look at the hiring process bailiffs must go through before they’re on the job.
Applicants are required to become certified peace officers, as well as complete background checks.
The final decision falls on the judge rather than the county.
KRGV’s Trason Bragg spoke with Judge Fred Garza Jr. He has hired two bailiffs in his 23-year career.
