WESLACO – An alert was sent out from AEP Texas warning customers of imposters posing as employees.

People are calling customers, or going door-to-door, saying they need to replace electric meters and are asking for a deposit start the process or their electricity will be shut off.

AEP representatives say attempts have been made in West Texas, but expect cases to spread. They also say they do periodically switch out meters, but will never ask for payment to remove or replace one.

If you suspect you’re being misled, AEP says you should call local authorities and then report the incident to them at 1-877-373-4858.
