WESLACO - The American Red Cross and the Weslaco Fire Department helped residents install free smoke detectors inside their homes Saturday.

Over the past five years, the American Red Cross has worked toward a goal of reducing the number of fire deaths and injuries by 25 percent.

Weslaco Fire Department Lieutenant Richard Stubbs says you're more likely to not make it out of a house fire at night.

"People need to hear the beep when they sleep, in other words when there's a fire in the middle of the night they need to be able to hear that smoke alarm. " said Stubbs.

During every smoke detector installation, the American Red Cross sends someone to educate homeowners on escape plans and fire safety.
