REYNOSA, Mex. – Residents in the southern end of Reynosa woke up to heavy gunfire Wednesday morning.

Long lists of reports of gunfire, burning cars and helicopters in Colonia Juarez and two other neighborhoods, Alianza Social and fraccionamiento Ramon Perez Garcia, circulated on social media.

A government statement issued Wednesday morning says that around 7 a.m., heavy gunfire broke out between rival criminal groups.

Authorities say they got involved and were in control half an hour later.

They say the fleeing criminals fired down several residential streets. Burning cars and abandoned cars were also discovered.

Some people at the McAllen-Hidalgo International Bridge told CHANNEL 5 NEWS they were alarmed by what they heard.

The Tamaulipas government says at least one person was injured.
