HIDALGO – Border Patrol agents say apprehension numbers show more families crossing the border illegally.

Border Patrol Supervisory Agent Dustin Araujo explains thousands of people are coming through Hidalgo and Starr Counties.

In 2014, Border Patrol agents apprehended more than 52,000 people; the numbers for 2018 show a new record of more than 63,000 family apprehensions.

Local resident Gonzalo Mancias says his family's home is next to the path that many people take when crossing the border illegally.

Mancias says people sometimes come through his gates and has resorted to his neighbor’s dogs to keep him aware of unwanted guests.

Agent Araujo explains Border Patrol is providing more manpower to Hidalgo and Starr Counties.

Border Patrol is also reporting an increase in certain types of drugs confiscated at the border.

"Marijuana seizures do account for the highest levels of drug seizures in the RGV sector, but we have seen a increase in hard narcotics specifically cocaine and methamphetamine crossing between the ports of entry," says Araujo.

Authorities say they are still working on updated numbers regarding drug seizures.
