The rate of immunizations for required vaccines among kindergarteners has been declining, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Every year there are some kids that don't get the recommended vaccination, and they're at increased risk for life altering infections as a result,” Brownsville Public Health Director Dr. Christopher Romero said.

Romero said he believes these vaccines are medical advancements, and when a child is up-to-date on them, they could help prevent long term debilitating diseases.

On Monday, Brownsville's health department will launch a podcast to promote childhood immunizations.

Pediatrician Asim Zamir saidh he’s also seen childhood vaccinations decrease in his office.

“After the pandemic, people have become very fearful,” Zamir said. “We eradicated polio from the world so we don't see those cases of kids getting paralyzed."

Caccines for childhood immunization are available at your local county's health department. Some doctor's offices offer them at no cost if you qualify.
