BROWNSVILLE – The Brownsville Independent School District is stepping in to help six children left without their mother.

Twenty-nine year old, Janet Jimenez-Ramirez was run over last week while walking on the shoulder of Padre Island Highway.

A 72-year-old driver veered off the roadway, striking Jimenez and her 2-year-old son.

Her son was rushed to the hospital, but did not survive. Jimenez later died Monday morning.

Brownsville ISD Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Esperanza Zendejas said grief counselors have been called in to help the six students cope with the loss of their mother and little brother.

“The kids are going through a terrible, terrible time. This is a very difficult time. We hope that through counseling sessions and afterwards additional counseling. We will help restore their confidence and their ability to try to function as normal as possible,” said Zendejas.

The children range in ages from 8 to 15 years old and attended Brownsville Rivera High School, Perkins Elementary and Egly Elementary School.

The six children are currently staying with a family friend. Students are holding fundraisers throughout the city to help their fellow classmates.
