MERCEDES – A financial crunch has prompted the Mercedes Independent School District to hold a special meeting.

It’s been confirmed some jobs will be cut.

The Mercedes community learned more about the budget concerns in Tuesday’s meeting.

The interim superintendent discussed the breakdown of their fund balance over the years and explained the student population is decreasing as staff costs are increasing.

"From a high of almost $16 million down to $1.8 million and the following year $1.5 million and today we are at $500,000... Wow,” explains Mercedes ISD interim superintendent Maria Filomena Leo.

Some staff will keep their jobs, others are still in limbo.
