WESLACO – A massive data breach at Capital One compromised a lot of personal information.

It was one of the biggest data breaches in history.

Capital one reveals a hacker gained access to over 100 million credit card applications and current customers were also hit.

If your information is compromised Capital One will notify you.

The bank will be offering free credit checks and identity protection.

There are also other things residents can do right now to protect themselves.

Look over your credit card and banking statements.

Report any suspicious activity as soon as possible and call Capital One to freeze your card.

You can also put a freeze on your credit, just keep in mind taking this step means no one will be able to access your credit reports without your permission.

If someone tries to take out a loan in your name, banks can't review your report so they won't authorize the credit.

You can unfreeze it for your own applications but there will be a short delay.
