BROWNSVILLE – At the beginning of the season, a lot was put on the plate of Gustavo Vasquez. He was one of just two starters back on offense. Vasquez has responded with his best season yet, accounting for over 2,000 total yards and 19 touchdowns.

“I’m a senior so now you have to take the role as being the leader,” said Vasquez.

The quarterback took the role head on and he’s come up big for the team when they needed him the most. Weeks ago, Vasquez score the game-winning touchdown to beat Mercedes. That was a pivotal moment during the team’s five-game winning streak.

“They beat us last year,” said Vasquez. “We wanted to come in to that game and just wanted to win it. At the end of the day it was kind of whoever had the most heart.”

Brownsville Veterans needs two wins to clinch the district title outright. It’s Vasquez’s job to keep the Chargers focused on finishing strong.

“Every week you know just getting that game plan,” said Vasquez. “Go in there and accomplish it and get it done.”
