Contract for Portion of Border Wall Project in Starr Co. Announced

RIO GRANDE CITY – Construction of a new section of the border wall is set to start later this year in Starr County.

A contract was awarded to Southwest Valley Construction for more than $33 million Wednesday for four miles of a new border wall system.

This is in addition to the three miles announced last month.

the new construction will be four segments built just south of Rio Grande City and La Grulla.

The project will included 30-foot steel bollards, road construction, detection technology and lighting installation.

In total, seven miles of wall are confirmed to be built in Starr County.

Construction on the first three miles is expected to start in August.

The additional four miles will start in November.
