Crews Respond to Boat Fire on SPI

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND – Authorities responded to a boat fire north of the Causeway on South Padre Island Friday afternoon.

Officials said no one was hurt.

A lieutenant with the Coast Guard in Port Isabel said the Corpus Christi Coast Guard deployed a helicopter to the scene. Texas Parks and Wildlife also responded.

Coast Guard officials said the boat was a recreational boat. CHANNEL 5 NEWS is told two people were on board at the time but jumped out. They were rescued and not injured.

The Marine Safety Detachment Team is working with the owner to come up with a plan to recover the boat.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
